Demands to donors

In practice among donors of reproductive cells (gamets) can often be met:

  • patients’ relatives and  friends;
  • anonymous professional donors, who have passed selection and medical examination;
  • participants of ART programmes.

Rather high demands are made not only to donors’ physical health and age. When selecting donors, phenotypic data (regular face features, body-build), frame of mind, and presence of own healthy children, etc are considered.

Donation of eggs (oocytes)

In Ukraine main requirements for egg (oocyte) donors are:

  • woman's age shall be from 20 to 32;
  • presence of a born healthy child;
  • absence of negative phenotypic manifestations;
  • normal somatic health;
  • absence of medical contraindications for participation in an oocyte donation programme;
  • absence of genetic diseases;
  • absence of harmful habits (drug addiction, alcoholism, toxicomania)

It is desirable that woman is not going to have more children because ovary injury is possible while this procedure. Ovary injury can lead to infertility.

Sperm donation

Very high demands are made to sperm donors. In Ukraine the requirements for sperm donors are:

  • age shall be from 20 to 40;
  • presence of a born healthy child;
  • absence of negative phenotypic manifestations;
  • absence of somatic and genetic diseases;
  • absence of deviations from normal morphometric and phenotypic features;
  • prohibition of alcohol, drug, toxic agent consumption;
  • sperm conformity with certain quality indicators ( ejaculate amount, concentration and motility sperm cells, their cryotolerance, etc)

Sperm donor is carefully examined by specialists (urologist, geneticist, psychiatrist, and physician). When examining, a blood group and rhesus-factor are determined; tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, other infectious and venereal disease are conducted. Genetic investigation is also carried out, and spermogram is done (sperm rates should be higher than average ones).

After receipt donor’s sperm is cryopreserved. Six months later donor undergoes all analyses one more time. If there is no disease, this genetic material can be used for artificial insemination.
