Possible risks and problems during the programme of donation.

Before taking a decision you need to know that different complications are possible during the infertility treatment while applying IVF method. Risks and problems of medical character are possible on every stage of programme of donation. But you shouldn’t worry as they are not frequent and we always inform our patients about all possible risks.

Risks at ovarian stimulation

Skin rash, fatigability, fever and other

Special medication (including hormonal ones) are used for ovary stimulation and cultivation of oocytes and embryos. Some of these preparations are injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. There can be irritation, bleeding, edema at the places of their injections. There are other side effects such as head ache, allergic reaction, appearance of skin rash, fever, depression, fatigability in the first days after injections. These complications aren’t dangerous and they don’t need special treatment.

Ovarian hyperstimulation

Ovarian hyperstimulation is the most serious side effect on this stage of IVF. It is accompanied by enlargement of ovary, which causes discomfort in the lower belly. “Modest” enlargement of ovary occurs only in 20% of cases. These side effects disappear in 2-3 weeks after the end of treatment. In case of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome significant enlargement of ovary and fluid accumulation in abdominal cavity are possible. The rate of this syndrome is only 1,3% of all cases of ovarian stimulation.

In order to minimize risks prior to the procedure a doctor conducts an analysis of patient’s hormonal condition and examines the peculiarities of structure of her ovary. Dosage of medicines is made in accordance with analysis, age and weight of a patient.

Risks at egg retrieval

There are some risks during the procedure of egg retrieval. On this stage of IVF eggs are retrieved by a special needle from follicles. The procedure is conducted under anaesthetic with ultrasound screening. Its’ lasts for 15-20 minutes. Two groups of risks are possible:

  • Risks of anaesthetics’ use;
  • Risks of needle use in vagina.

The fist group of risks consists in complications of anaesthetic’ use: respiratory disturbance, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, double vision, sleepiness, loss of arterial tension, etc

In case of intolerance to some anaestetics more serious complications (anaphylactic shock, respiratory standstill) may occur. These complications are rare and depend on individual peculiarities of patients.

While introducing a needle into vagina, bleedings, injury of urinary bladder and organs of abdominal cavity are possible. These complications require immediate surgical intervention.

These complications aren’t frequent; moreover our experienced doctors make complex examination of patients to minimize all possible risks
