At 65 Israeli Woman Gives Birth to First Child
According to Jerusalem Post newspaper, an Israeli woman gave birth to her first child this week at 65 years of age with the assistance of in vitro fertilization.
“Haya Shahar, a 65-year-old Hasidic woman from Bnei Brak who was unable to have a baby during her 46-year marriage to 67-year-old Shmuel, gave birth on Monday to a healthy baby boy by cesarean section at Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba,” the newspaper reported, noting that the mother is the oldest woman ever to give birth to a child in Israel.
Shahar’s neighbors commented that the new mother had been trying to get pregnant during her 46-year of marriage and had never lost hope of becoming a mother.
“Shahar’s 2.68-kg. (5 pounds 9 ounce-) baby was produced by in vitro fertilization with donated or purchased sperm - the hospital would not disclose exactly, although it might have been from Russia,” the newspaper specified.
In Israel it is illegal to perform in vitro procedures on woman over 54 years of age, so women often go abroad to seek out the treatment.
