Indian woman becomes a happy mom at 60
Punji Patel feels triumphant at becoming a mother at the age of 60. "You're seldom blessed with the joy of becoming a mother at this age," she said. The 60-year-old woman has successfully delivered a 3.9kg healthy baby boy through in-vitro fertilization, something that is rare at her age.
Punji and Ranchod were married for 35 years. She had menopause about 15 years back and had an atrophic uterus. The couple has been settled in Mumbai for 10 years.
For years couple had been trying, without success, to have a child until Punji entered menopause. They visited several hospitals, temples and even holy men to have a child but only met with disappointment.
Punji, despite her advanced age, was keen to have her own baby and decided to take the risk of delivering one herself. She and her husband approached a fertility centre. She got pregnant through IVF in the first cycle itself.
According to IVF specialist Dr Mehul Damani Punji's 65-year-old husband's egg was use to cause the pregnancy through IVF last year.
"The woman's uterus had become extremely small because of hormone deprivation, especially oestrogens. In her case, pregnancy looked virtually impossible but she wanted to go ahead. Therefore, we reactivated her uterus through hormone dosages and she started having menses. Then we put her on IVF trial and an embryo was created using the sperm of her husband," said Dr Damani.
"Though the baby is the most wonderful blessing for his parents, it is time to consider post-menopausal births. There are always worry about the upbringing of children who have old parents," Dr Damani said.
However, for Punji, the baby is nothing but a miracle.
