Polish bishops condemn introduction of IVF law

27.07.2015

The Catholic bishops of Poland have issued a statement decrying a new law that provides government funding for in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The bishops said they were “deeply disappointed and pained” by the passage of the new law, which was signed on July 22 by President Bronislaw Komorowski.

The passage of the law represents a defeat for the Polish hierarchy, which had steadily opposed it, and a late victory for Komorowski, who will soon step down after losing a re-election bid in May.

“The moral responsibility for what has occurred lies with the legislators who supported and approved this law, and with managers of health service institutions where this method is used,” the bishops said.
