The 55-Year-Old Mother Of Twins Has Undergone IVF Successfully

CHANDIGARH: At the age of 55, Kawaljeet Kaur Gowara will be a mother once again after 26 years. And it will be twins this time, as she has undergone in-vitro fertilization successfully.

A resident of Panchkula, Kaur had lost her son last year in a road accident and she decided to be a mother again at an age when fertility generally declines.

The decision was not easy for the family. ''The loss of my son was hellish for us. So we decided to go for IVF. Our friends and relatives suggested that we do that,'' she added.

Kaur underwent treatment at a private IVF clinic in Sector 33. Her doctor, GK Bedi said, ''The couple came to us with lot of expectations. They wanted twins. So we implanted two embryos for that. Fortunately the uterus lining was normal and the patient did not need surrogacy.''

It is tough to discuss this method of conception for people at this age.

Kaur said, ''I have not informed my mother about this, who is the family's eldest member.''

But the Gowaras want to motivate issueless couples, or those who have lost their only child, to adopt this method.

Kaur's husband, Surjit Singh Gowara said, ''We are apprehensive about the elders in the family. But if anyone comes for guidance we will direct them without any inhibitions. Even if we could not become grandparents by now, we would have two children soon.''

Women carry 600 eggs in the lifetime. This count decreases at the rate of one egg per month. After 40 years of age, 60% eggs become genetically abnormal. Explaining the procedure and its complications, Dr Bedi said, ''There is screening of quality eggs and sperm, which includes cleaning them in some chemical medium in a petri dish. The delivery is like any other case and families should not feel shy about all this.''
