The Most Prolific Surrogate Mother Helps Childless Couples Realise The Dream
WALES’ most prolific surrogate mother has spoken of the joy that helping childless couples realise the dream of becoming parents can bring.
Liz Stringer, a chef in her 40s from Gwynedd, has had five children for other couples whose health problems have prevented them conceiving naturally.
Although she has two biological daughters of her own, Liz said that giving others the gift of parenthood was just as rewarding.
“Being a mum is the best thing in the world so if you can help someone else achieve that, why not?
“I wanted to be able to give that to someone who couldn’t do it for themselves,” she said.
“When you have children you know how much pleasure they bring to your life – they complete your life. It’s why women are here.”
On Mother’s Day, as well as getting cards from her daughters, Liz gets cards from the surrogate families thanking her for helping them mark the occasion they feared they’d never celebrate.
But Liz has said she has never had any over-bearing maternal instinct when it came to handing babies over to their parents.
“To make someone a mother, to make parents and grandparents and aunts, is wonderful. It makes you feel very feminine,” she said.
“It’s never been hard for me to hand the babies over. I never felt they were mine. I was just carrying them.”
Liz is the co-founder of Surrogacy UK, which offers those interested in surrogacy support and information.
She has refused offers to be a surrogate in the past including an illegal cash offer of £25,000. It is illegal to pay for surrogacy in the UK.
