New Fertility Treatment To Choose The Best Sperm
Infertility specialists now have a tool to choose the best sperm to produce 'top quality babies'.
The intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI) technique allows doctors a 7,200 times magnified look – as against the 200 times available so far — at semen and eliminate sperms with defects.
While nature makes the best selection when a baby is conceived naturally, couples with fertility issues have to leave the job to doctors.
“When a couple approa-ches a doctor for fertility treatment, we analyse the man’s semen and evaluate sperm count, structure and motility. The structure of the sperm is the most significant factor,” said Geetha Haripriya, specialist in reproductive medicine at Prashanth Fertility Resear-ch Centre, where the first twins conceived by IMSI were delivered recently.
IMSI is a powerful microscope that helps a computer detect structural defects in sperm heads.
“Even tiny abnormalities such as vacuoles & droplets that decrease fertilising capacity are detected. Ab-normal sperms can cause failed IVF cycles & abnormal embryos that may not survive — mother may miscarry,” Dr G. said.
IMSI doubles the chances of a successful pregnancy. “We choose the best sperm and inject it into the egg. Once the embryo is formed, we use embryo-scope, a new-age device that provides dynamic imaging, to look at its development. Embryos that show the best progress in two days are implanted into the uterus,” Dr G. said.
