Dental Health Connected To Fecundity

22.05.2012

A recent study has revealed that dental health might play a significant role in fertility factors.

The study matched frequency of periodontal disease with the rate through which females conceived.

Periodontal disease is a type of disease that affects one or more of the periodontal tissues, i.e. alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, cementum and gingiva.

Researchers revealed that out of 1,956 females aspiring to conceive, 74 percent reported healthy teeth, whereas rest of the subjects suffered from cavities.

They found that females suffering from dental troubles experienced 42 percent longer time to become pregnant.

The researchers stated that this might be owing to a type of oral bacteria, which is responsible for cavities, that augments inflammation which not only affects placental health, but may also raise miscarriage or preterm birth risk.
