Kazakhstan Planning to Increase the Number of State-Funded IVF Cycles to 750

26.06.2013

The number of cycles of in vitro fertilization increases year by year. Thus, the number of cycles was 100 in 2010 increasing to 600 in 2012. This year, the number of IVF cycles is 700. By 2015, their number is planned to be increased to 750.

Women have an opportunity to choose where to undertake this procedure. The Ministry of Healthcare makes a list of IVF centers licensed for performing such procedures in Kazakhstan within the guaranteed volume of free medical care.

Deputy Minister of Healthcare of Kazakhstan Erik Baizhunusov said: “The number of quotas for IVF is increased annually. The Ministry can provide all women with quotas for IVF. But, the number of centers licensed to perform such procedures is very small in Kazakhstan. 15 years ago when we just began allocation of quotas, there was only one laboratory. Presently, seven laboratories have licenses. For this reason the government increased the number of quotas to 700. If more laboratories are licensed, the number of quotas will also increase.”

In order to receive a quota for IVF, a couple with infertility problems needs to be under dispensary observation in a maternity welfare clinic at the place of residence. Couples with infertility problems having therapeutic indications for IVF undergo laboratory and diagnostic tests to prepare for the IVF.

After preparation of necessary documents, the doctors of the clinic submit the document to the healthcare department where a decision on allocation of quotas for IVF is made by a commission.

Thereat, a woman is provided with an opportunity to choose a medical organization to undergo the procedure.

Presently, there are 10 centers in the country performing assisted reproductive treatment including in vitro fertilization. This includes two national centers in Almaty and Astana and 8 private clinics in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and Taraz.
