Lifting of the ban on the import and export of gametes in Latvia
The Latvian government adopted amendments to the law "On the sexual and reproductive health." Now, it is legally allowed in Latvia to export and import donated eggs and sperm for use in artificial insemination programs.
The purpose of the adoption of this amendment is the improvement of legal regulation in the sphere of application of assisted reproductive technologies in the treatment of infertility.
According to the Ministry of Health of Latvia, the lifting of the ban on the import and export of gametes will help to improve the demographic situation in the country.
Infertility in Latvia is a serious social and health problem. Annually as a result of artificial insemination are born approximately 200-300 children.
