Observation of American scientists revealed, letrozole is more effective than standard drug and significantly increases the chances of pregnancy in women who are infertile due to polycystic ovary syndrome. The results of this work were published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine.

As is well known, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) occurs when excessive production in women body of male sex hormones (androgens), but also disrupted the normal functioning of other glands. In PCOS does not have time to mature the egg and ovulation does not occur; follicle from which the egg to be released, is not broken, and filled with a liquid, forming a cyst. According to studies, olikistoz ovaries affects approximately 5-10% of women of reproductive age, as being the most common cause of female infertility. Clomiphene citrate - a standard drug that has for decades used to stimulate ovulation in women.

"Clomiphene has its drawbacks - said professor of obstetrics and gynecology and lead author Richard Legros (Richard Legro). - Its effectiveness does not exceed 22% after six months of therapy, the drug increases the probability of multiple pregnancies and has various side effects, including hot flashes and frequent mood swings. "Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania decided to compare the effect of letrozole with clomiphene - a drug that suppresses the production of estrogen and is commonly used as an anti-hormonal agents. In a randomized study involved 750 women aged between 18 to 40 years, who suffered from polycystic ovaries and wanted to get pregnant. Panelists were divided into two groups: one of which patients received clomiphene second - letrozole; dosage of the drug increased with each menstrual cycle for five months.

The results showed that pregnancy and successful birth were higher in women in the first group (27.5%) compared with patients in the second group (19.1%). In addition, significantly increased ovulation rate in the group treated with letrozole. Frequency of twin births was lower in women of this experimental group - 3.9% versus 6.9% in the group treated with clomiphene. As for side effects, clomiphene often causes the tides, and letrozole appeared associated with symptoms such as fatigue and dizziness; in both groups cases of birth defects were rare.
