Analgesia during labor helps reduce the risk of postpartum depression
According to statistics from the National Health Service of UK, about 10% of women are suffering from postpartum depression. The most severe form of postpartum depression occurs in one in 1,000 women. The recurrence rate in subsequent pregnancies is nearly 50%.
As a new study shows, analgesia during labor can significantly reduce the risk of this disease, reports The Telegraph. Unfortunately, there is no way to make a completely painless childbirth. We can only minimize the suffering of women, thereby giving her more positive emotions.
It is known that depression is associated with acute and chronic pain. Consequently, anesthesia may also affect the depression. The study was conducted by Chinese scientists. It was found that women who resort to the use of epidural analgesia for a natural birth, are less prone to postpartum depression.
Reported that women who have had recourse to anesthesia, six weeks after the birth rates of depression was 14%. Those who did not use anesthesia, the figure was almost 35%. Breastfeeding was also more common among women who used anesthesia.
