Toxicosis of mother is healthy for child

Morning sickness has a positive effect on a child's intelligence. However, the researchers caution that the beneficial effects of morning sickness are not subject to excessive vomiting (hyperemesis gravidarum).

Researchers from the University of Toronto found: women that do not suffer from nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, have from three to ten times more miscarriages in the first three months of pregnancy, as opposed to women who had symptoms of toxemia. Children whose mothers suffered from morning sickness, have less risk to be born prematurely, with any birth defects and reduced birth weight. IQ test results of these children were higher.

The researchers analyzed data from 10 studies conducted in five countries between 1992 and 2012. The studies involved a total of 850,000 pregnant women. The analysis revealed: the mothers who suffered from nausea, premature births occurred in 6.4% of cases, while the rest - in 9.5% of cases. The risk of miscarriage was more than three times higher in women who do not experience morning sickness. The risk of having a child with birth defects declined 80% to 30%. Positive effect was particularly noticeable among women 35 years and older. Presumably, the benefits are more pronounced at moderate and severe forms of ailments, compared with light.

Lead researcher Gideon Koren said: "The strong morning sickness during pregnancy adversely affects the health and quality of life of women. Our results show that such severe symptoms have a positive effect on the fetus. This may be due to more favorable hormonal when toxicosis, although this hypothesis still has not been proved. "
