Breast milk can be used for the treatment of sick children
Breast milk itself is a baby food, but for the sick hospitalized children is also a medicine.
Press service of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP, USA) reported that a whole series of studies has been devoted to treating properties of breast milk for infants. Now organizations such as the World Health Organization or the American Academy of Pediatrics are widely recommending breastfeeding and human milk for all infants without exception.
"And for the seriously ill newborn infants in intensive care are particularly important immunological and anti-inflammatory properties of human milk," - says Diana Spatz, the head of the lactation program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Since 2006 this hospital for the treatment of high-risk infants uses donor breast milk in addition to the parent, if this is insufficient, or if the mother is not able to provide milk for her baby.
CHOP has announced plans to launch a non-profit breast milk banks in conjunction with the Association of Breast-milk banks in North America (Human Milk Banking Association of North America) during the year. Because of this rare opportunity treatment of infants may become available to most hospitals.
