Scientists identified a hormone that can protect brain of premature children

29.08.2014

As BBC reported, the hormone erythropoietin (EPO) is able to prevent brain injury in babies born much earlier period.

In the study took part about 500 children from Switzerland that were born between 26 and 31 weeks of pregnancy. As a result, brain scans showed that taking this hormone shortly after birth may help babies avoid brain damage due to too early birth.

Experts are calling for larger studies that can more fully display the effects and risks of hormone administration to infants.

Erythropoietin is a hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells. Also, it is sometimes illegally used by athletes to improve their performance.
