For the first time woman with a transplanted uterus gave birth to a child

06.10.2014

In Sweden, for the first time in the world woman, which was transplanted the uterus, gave a birth. According to BBC, the boy was born prematurely, but his health is within normal limits.

It is reported that 36-year-old woman was born with healthy ovaries, but without a uterus (similar anomaly is observed at an average of one out of 4,500 girls). After about a year after transplantation of the uterus, when doctors were convinced that the body is functioning properly, a woman was transplanted embryos created in the laboratory using her egg and sperm of her husband.

In the study, over the past two years, Dr. Brannstrom and colleagues have transplanted the uterus to nine women, but because of complications later two of them had to remove transplanted organ. Earlier this year, Brannstrom began implanting embryos remaining seven women. As he said, two of them are now pregnant for more than 25 weeks.

Due to the fact that some doctors have expressed concerns about whether it is possible to conduct similar operations throughout (the operation is expensive and is associated with serious health risks), it is obvious that the first successful operation of this kind opens up new opportunities for women who have lost their uterus due to cancer or born without it.
