Taking antibiotics during pregnancy increases the risk of obesity in the child
A study at Columbia University found that children who were exposed to antibiotics in the second or third trimester of pregnancy had a higher risk of obesity at age 7 years.
This is the first study to establish how the use of antibiotics in the second or third trimester of pregnancy increases the risk of obesity in the offspring. Antibiotics affect microbiome of mother and enter the fetal circulation through the placenta. In the observation period from 1998 to 2006, doctors examined 436 children, 16 percent of which had mothers who use antibiotics in these periods of pregnancy.
Results showed that these children had a 84% higher risk of obesity. As said epidemiologist Andrew Rundle, «Further research is needed about how to deliver and apply antibiotics during pregnancy. This research will help us understand how to create an early platform to support healthy growth and development of children. "Earlier, the US study showed that resveratrol and malnutrition during gestation may damage the health of the unborn child.
