In Sweden two children, carried in the transplanted uterus, were born

04.12.2014

Intense, long-term work of Swedish scientists has paid off: a difference of a few days in a country's clinic were born two boys, whom their mother carried in the uterus transplanted from intravital donor.

Achievements of modern medicine can really amaze: 2 Swede carried their children in the same uterus, in which a few decades earlier, they were stand themselves.

In 2012, scientists from University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy became the first in the world to carry out unique surgery on  uterus transplantation for women who for various reasons didn't have such organ.

A total of 9 operations were performed - in all cases, except one, donors were mothers of patients.

More than a year after uterus transplantation, eggs were fertilized outside of patients body using in vitro fertilization method. After that received embryos were implanted in the uterus, that had already begun to function in a new body. The first such child who was carried in the donor uterus, was born in October of this year.

For the sake of reducing the risk of possible complications, doctors from Sweden used cesarean section, in which children were born 3-4 weeks before expected date of delivery.

Interestingly that, in one case young mother's uterus was absent from birth, and the other patient, a 34-year-old woman, had this organ removed a few years ago due to cancer.

As Swedish scientists assure, in the near future it is expected appearance of another, fourth child, carried in the donor uterus - pregnancy of this patient also proceeds normally.
