Good care and vaccination against influenza can significantly reduce mortality during childbirth
In the UK, the proportion of women who die during or shortly after childbirth has decreased. However, researchers from Oxford University believe that up to 50% of deaths can be avoided by better care for women during childbirth and making a flu shots.
Researchers believe that physicians should be more knowledgeable about the general health of women during pregnancy and pay attention to the the risk of serious infection during childbirth. According to experts, the situation is improving, but much remains to be done.
Analysis showed that 357 women have died during pregnancy or within six weeks after between 2010 and 2012. About a quarter of the deaths were due to sepsis - a severe infection causing inflammation throughout the body. The immune system is weakened during pregnancy, so the wounds caused by the separation of the placenta, can be a source of infection.
Furthermore, one of the 11 deaths were caused by influenza. Researchers believe that more than half of them could have been prevented with a flu shot.
