The Law on triparental IVF approved in Britain

The House of Commons of the British Parliament voted to adopt a law on the so-called "triparental IVF."

If the bill obtain approval in the House of Lords, the UK will become the first country in the world where it will be allowed to use for artificial fertilization of genetic material from three people.

Such technology was developed to prevent the risk of serious hereditary diseases transmitted through the mitochondrial DNA. These diseases are not treatable. In the UK at risk of developing such pathologies susceptible to about 1 in 6,500 children.

Technology is based on IVF with donor eggs (from which the nuclear material is removed) from a woman that is not a carrier of mitochondrial disorders. The result is an embryo containing the nuclear DNA from the mother and father, and mitochondrial - from the donor.

As authors of the methodology note, mitochondrial DNA has no influence on the hereditary characteristics of the unborn child; the amount of mitochondrial DNA is very small compared to nuclear DNA.

Despite the approval of the legislators, the adoption of this law has caused a number of protests in certain social circles; in their view, the use of genetic material from three people can create serious ethical problems.
