In Sweden, women transplanted donor uterus

Nine women in Sweden were transplanted donor uterus. Women in Sweden are hoping to become the first pregnant women, who received the uterus from living donors, which were made by their relatives. This experiment will show whether transplanted organ allow to give birth to women without a "native" uterus.

"This is a new type of operation," - said to Associated Press Mats Brannstrom, lead doctor in the team of physicians at the University of Gothenburg. "We do not have a textbook for its implementation."

Similar attempts to organ transplantation for gestation has previously been made, but the woman could not give birth.

All women who have had surgery were born without a uterus, or it was removed due to cancer of the cervix. Soon, they will try to get pregnant.

At the next stage of the experiment, doctors are planning to transfer embryos produced by in vitro fertilization in the transplanted organs. Potentially, this would allow women to become pregnant and bear their own biological children.

If this treatment is successful, it could be recommended to many others, doctors told the media. About 1 in 4,500 girls are born without a uterus, this so-called syndrome MRKH. And about 40 percent of women of childbearing age develop cervical cancer.
